Steve, Although static building isn't supported by us, and although we make no guarantees that the static launch process won't change drastically without warning and at any time, you may wish to consult setup/Rules.linux-semistat-py22 for an example.
The trick with static builds is that PyMOL needs to do a bunch of magic to get the environment right before the Python interpreter gets going and Tkinter starts up.
