It appears that Warren was correct and that the Apple Intermediate Codec is not included with OS X or Quicktime. I went to an old backup of our Mac and found AppleIntermediateCodec.component in /Library/ Quicktime. Copying the codec over to the new install solved all of our problems.

We ran into a similar problem as a result of a Quicktime upgrade.

We downloaded & installed the precompiled binaries for Mplayer, which
played those movies fine.

Michael,

If my recollection is correct, the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) is not included with free QuickTime, but is instead an extra add on available separately with products such as Final Cut Pro. Do you have any AIC-encoded QuickTime movies not created with MacPyMOL that currently do play under
Leopard?

Cheers,
Warren

Subject: [PyMOL] OS X 10.5 and Pymol Quicktime files

Hello,

Since upgrading to OS X 10.5 I've been unable to play any
movies that had been made with pymol. Loading the file
results in a white screen. I can press play and the progress
indicator advances but the screen stays white.
All were saved as Quicktime movies using MacPymol. I
believe that the Apple Intermediate Codec was used if that's helpful.

This is also affecting presentations that I had made using
Keynote. Any animation from Pymol saved as a Quicktime file
no longer works.

If I save a new movie using MacPymol it works as expected. I
can include it in my Keynote presentations and it is fine. I
would just like to be able to access my library of animations
that I have made over the years.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

regards,

Michael Murray
