Hello JunJun, Yes indeed, access to new features can sometimes be an issue with PyMOL. Please understand that we must maintain a healthy equilibrium between FREE stuff for everyone and INCENTIVE rewards for project sponsors. Our approach has evolved over time, but here is a where things stand today (and will likely remain):
I. What is FREE about PyMOL? A. FREE Open-Source Code is always up-to-date and can be had for the effort of a Subversion checkout & compilation. Open-Source Linux is the natural target platform for Open-Source PyMOL. B. FREE documentation is available on PyMOLWiki.org with links to other sites on the net. C. FREE peer-to-peer support is available via this pymol-users mailing list. D. FREE older builds for most platforms are available, but are typically 1-2 years (1-2 versions) out-of-date. E. FREE builds for-educational-use-only are updated periodically for use by full-time students and their teachers. II. What extra incentives exist for PyMOL Sponsors? A. Current PyMOL builds are an INCENTIVE for sponsorship. This includes the latest stable build (1.0r2) as well as the latest beta build (1.1b3). B. Official documentation is an INCENTIVE for sponsorship. Note however, that our docs supplement rather than replace http://PyMOLWiki.org. C. Maintenance & support services are an INCENTIVE for sponsorship. They mostly boil down to fixing bugs relating to your specific computer system, graphics card, or research, but we also provide individual usage assistance to PyMOL Power Users. D. Specific improvements can be directly purchased by sponsors or by poolings targeted funds from multiple sponsors. Case in point: the "group" command was developed under contract to a top-3 pharma company. III. So, what should one do if a desired feature isn't yet in a FREE PyMOL build? Either: A. Compile the open-source code, B. Sponsor the project, (or) C. Wait a year or two. That's how the PyMOL project works!
