Not sure what you are referring to here. test_geninterp.py contains tests that use try:except:, and check that they are really called. Althought it was broken in the past few days (at least at one point it failed because it was out of sync with your new simpliciations), it works fine now.

Many thanks! Yes, I tricked myself by looking into the flowgraph of ovfcheck_lshift (debugging the "syntax error" case) and wondered why there areno exceptional branches left.
