Cool!

This may be the chance I've been looking for
to talk about PyPy source with gurus *in person* to come up to speed
fast on it and be a real contributor to PyPy project.

Contributions are of course very welcome! I guess the most immediate step would be to read through the documentation and ask any question you might have (here or on the IRC channel).

Any suggestions are desperately needed....

What can I give back to encourage someone to mentor me? (Something
that involved learning the source really well like helping comment
the code and document the source is an idea.)

It certainly won't be a problem finding work for you :-)

Who would be a good person to mentor me who can help me understand the
source code really well?

Where are most PyPy developers working?

The paid PyPy developers are working in Gothenburg: Armin, Anders C., Samuele (Sweden); Hildesheim: Holger, Berlin: Christian, Saarbruecken: Anders L., Heidelberg: me (from October on) (Germany) and Paris: Ludovic, Adrien.

Are there any conferences and meetings I should make sure to attend?

Perhaps the easiest way to come up to speed with PyPy would be to come to one (or several :-) )of our coding sprints. The next one will be in Paris in October. Most of the developers attend these sprints and quite some new contributors were introduced to PyPy by coming to a sprint.

Any other thoughts?

Can't really say much about the mentoring idea: I guess one of the problems would be that the person mentoring you would be distracted from his own work. On the other hand the work you would do could probably make up for this.

From my own experience it is very easy to get all the advice you need from the gurus by hanging out on IRC and bothering them :-). Although a sprint is of course more effective.

Cheers,

Carl Friedrich
