No, this is not the major drawback for ctypes for me. I know people who would happily use something that works nicely on pypy and cpython without performance considerations. The problem is that ctypes is at the wrong level - you cannot do some things and that's where cython helps. Ctypes is also crazy and inconsistent and hard to use, this makes it even more problematic.
