It sounds like the packages for Gentoo are broken, but a quick search for problems in the Gentoo bug tracker didn't reveal any obvious problems. I'm guessing that this is the upgrade that broke things: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=234559 Maybe you could try and apply the upgrade again and report the problem using the bug tracker.
