You can also do:

line_edit = QLineEdit()
palette = QPalette()
palette.setColor(widget.backgroundRole(), QColor('red'))
line_edit.setPalette(palette)

for a more subtle effect, you might consider exchanging backgroundRole()
with foregroundRole().
