Mikael,

Thank you for the suggestion and reference. However, it seems to me that the
situation at hand is different from the one described in the reference - there
is no package in the apt archive that would be over-written by the
installation. Actually, the OS (kubuntu 10.10) was installed fairly recently
and no earlier version of pyside has been installed in this partition of the
hdd.

Also, the --force option, necessary as it may be sometimes, endangers the
integrity of the OS.

The python-pyside "is a metapackage for all modules." If it functioned as
intended, all or at least most of pyside packages would have been installed in
one hit.

I did try to install a few individual packages with Synaptic just to see if
that would work. The following are the messages in response of my attempt to
mark the packages for installation:

*******************
python-pyside.qtxml:
Depends: python-pyside.qtcore but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libshiboken0.5 (>=0.5.1) but 0.5.0-0ubuntu1 is to be installed

python-pyside.qtcore:
Depends: libshiboken0.5 (>=0.5.1) but 0.5.0-0ubuntu1 is to be installed
*******************

They seem to indicate that for shiboken the available package is version 0.5,
but the required package is version >= 0.5.1. Perhaps that is the reason for
failure to install?

Regretfuly I conclude that the "easy installation" of binaries is broken and
to install pyside on kubuntu/ubuntu one may have to compile from the source.
Alternative is keep on guessing what may or may not be broken.

Thank you for responding to my query.

OldAl.
