Hi list,

It's end of 2011, and time for a review of the PySide project achievements and status for the past year. Looking back, there has been a surprising amount of progress made. One year ago, we had just stabilized Qt Quick support and were making bi-weekly beta releases, heading for PySide 1.0.0. The bug inflow was huge, but so was the amount of bugs fixed for every release. In March the situation had started to settle and we deemed it safe to make the 1.0 release.

While I don't have much quantitative data, PySide adoption would seem to be growing steadily. Many proprietary software houses, for which PySide's licensing model suits well, incorporate or support PySide. Also, an application written in PySide was one of the first apps to be submitted to the Nokia N9 Ovi Store, and still the MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan platform has the best Python support of any mobile platform, by a wide margin. This is all thanks to PySide and its superb binding generation toolchain.

Unfortunately, the end of year also marks the end of Nokia's direct support for PySide, due to the rampdown of Nokia's MeeGo activities. To help the transition, I started the process of making PySide a Qt add-on, providing the project facilities and a framework within the Qt Project umbrella. The transition is still pending a few more contribution license agreements to be signed - I will contact the remaining contributors next week to see what can be done. (If you received Marius Storm-Olsen's mail about the CLA and did not act yet, please do so! It's vital for the PySide project.) I will still be around until end of June and will be able to devote plenty of time for finalizing the migration, so the project is not left hanging in mid-air.

As for the future maintenance and development of PySide, the community (other than Nokia or INdT), that is, will most likely have a much greater role in it. INdT has expressed intent on continuing support, but it's better if they describe their plans themselves. I would love to see other companies and individuals providing commercial support and consulting for PySide, as well - I believe the business opportunity is there.

Let's hope for a prosperous new year for PySide!

Best,

Matti Airas
PySide Project Lead
