This is definitely a version problem. I ran the test app on a pc with a
newer version of pytables and python and it works as expected.

Yes, this is most probably the problem.

I do recommend you to upgrade to the latest stable version of PyTables
(1.4) and HDF5 (1.6.5 as of now).
