Thanks a lot Dragan, Figure 2 of your article summarizes quite well my point. The gist of my question is how to define, with PyTables (and in particular the 'IsDescription' class), the pointers from the index table to the data tables.
At first I thought it was just a matter of using nested structures. However, nested structures serve, as far as I know, to group columns together, giving rise to a hierarchy of 'subcolumns'. I am instead interested in building a hierarchy of 'tables' and 'subtables' ---like that illustrated in the diagram of Fig.2 of your article. For that, I need to define a field of 'pointers' to the descendant 'subtables', but I have no clue how to do that using PyTables.
