Summary: Python/ast.c:541: seq_for_testlist: Assertion fails

Initial Comment:
As per bug #1588287, under rhel4 python 2.5 cannot build numpy-1.0 unless the
assert()s are turned off. Attached is a log file of my build attempt which
basically consisted of:

cd Python-2.5
./configure
make OPT=-g
cd numpy-1.0
../python setup.py build

This fails with this error:

python: Python/ast.c:541: seq_for_testlist: Assertion `((n)->n_type) == 326 ||
((n)->n_type) == 318 || ((n)->n_type) == 319 || ((n)->n_type) == \
300' failed.

While I'm reluctant to just #ifdef out the asserts() [by defining -DNDEBUG on
the compile line], this clearly must be why other people haven't run into this.

thanks, Darrell

ps: the Python-2.5.tar.bz2 & numpy-1.0.tar.gz files are just the public source
tarballs.
