Use codecs.lookup(alias).name to the the normalize name of a codec. Examples:
>>> import codecs
>>> codecs.lookup('utf-8').name
'utf-8'
>>> codecs.lookup('iso-8859-1').name
'iso8859-1'
>>> codecs.lookup('latin1').name
'iso8859-1'
>>> codecs.lookup('iso2022_jp').name
'iso2022_jp'
