Could you clarify what you think will be confusing? I see (a slight variant of) Chris Lambacher's conditional approach as the obvious best choice, if it is feasible. (1) The default is "What you are already doing." (2) If this is your only install, then assume you do want it on the path, as many newbies would. The only tweak is that if there is already a path to an *older-but-compatible* version, then its path entry should be replaced (not added to).
