I see nothing wrong in memory_ass_sub(). In 2.7:
if (destbuf + bytelen < srcbuf || srcbuf + bytelen < destbuf)
/* No overlapping */
memcpy(destbuf, srcbuf, bytelen);
else
memmove(destbuf, srcbuf, bytelen);
Other versions use similar idioms.
