Jean Brouwers added the comment: This is quite bizarre and difficult to reproduce. With gdb, 3.0a1 does get to the very end of Py_Finalize, but without gdb it doesn't.
Also, the call to static function call_all_exitfuncs is inlined, its while loop is shown inside Py_Finalize on MacOS X.
