The comment that Viktor posted still stands for Python 2.7. You can use subprocess in platform for Python 2.7, but only if it's available. Otherwise the module must fall back to the portable popen() that comes with the platform module. It may be worth adding that selection process to the popen() function in platform itself. For Python 3.x, you can use subprocess.
