.....: sl.whitespace = "|"
.....: sl.whitespace_split = True
.....: print list(sl)
In [114]: test_ws("h w") # works fine
['h w']
In [115]: test_ws("'h' w") # i expected ["'h' w"] here, but why?
["'h'", ' w']
