Ah, indeed.

You're right, but with weird results:

$ gcc -o /tmp/test test.c; /tmp/test
malloc() returned NULL after 600MB
$ gcc -DDO_MEMSET -o /tmp/test test.c; /tmp/test
malloc() returned NULL after 600MB

(I'm supposed to have gigabytes free?!)
