     * PyBUF_WRITEABLE).
     */
    if (PyArray_ISWRITEABLE(self)) {
        if (array_might_be_written(self) < 0) {
            goto fail;
        }
    }

... which seems to imply that mmap is not the only one with "dubious behaviour" 
(?).
