Terry J. Reedy added the comment: I believe I explained above the logical and technical factors that make the Idle shell inherently different from the console shell in this regard. As the title says, this issue is about not using tabs and not about mixing tabs and spaces. As I already said, my intended fix is to put the prompt in a sidebar (adapting the proposed editor line number code), which will allow use of space indents in the entry area, as in the editor.
