Raymond Hettinger added the comment: Unless there is a drop-in replacement, I don't think this should be deprecated or removed. Our biggest problem in the Python world is getting organizations using Python 2 to switch to Python 3. Deprecating modules that have been a part of the firmament for a long time works against that goal.
