Eric V. Smith added the comment: I'm not sure PyObject_GetItem instead of PyDict_GetItem in 3.x completely explains things, because the code in issue 6081 also works in 2.7.
But I don't think it's terribly important in any event, as long as we understand the 3.x difference.
