Berker Peksag added the comment: Thanks for the report. This was already done in Python 3.4. See https://docs.python.org/dev/whatsnew/3.4.html#changes-in-python-command-behavior and issue 18338 for details. Backporting this to 2.7 would break backwards compatibility so that means we can't change the behavior of python -V in a bugfix release.
