Actually, for me, it only crashes on a debug build when using -We with tests, an option I don't normally use, otherwise, I would have noticed it before. And, as noted, few downstream users use debug builds. But, more importantly, this is a new feature so it doesn't break any existing code. If that is the case, I think we don't need to expedite a release; it can wait four weeks for 3.7.0b2 and in that time we need to decide what the proper actions for 3.7 (fix, reimplement, remove) and for 3.8. Please chime in now if you strongly disagree.
