The patch and unit test (in test_posix5.PATCH) apply cleanly against the trunk. "make test" passes on two machines I tried, including a 64-bit Linux machine where the new unit test fails without the patch. The caveat is that with the machines I have, I can't exercise all #ifdef paths. However, the logic looks simple enough now.
