The recently merged PR GH-10454 significantly reduced the overhead of Squeezer's write() interception. The overhead should now be entirely insignificant. IMO that deals with the "... and is slow" part of this issue. We've still to decide whether the auto-squeezing is "too aggressive". I'll mention again that Raymond has brought up several additional important issues in the comments, that IMO should be processed into new issues and/or a roadmap for IDLE.
