Please understand that MSI is *not* a proprietary installer. Instead, it is just a data format to be interpreted by the installer. Whether that installer is proprietary or not depends on whether you use the Microsoft one, or write one yourself (or perhaps use a free interpreter for MSI that somebody else might have written).
