Mark Hammond <mhamm...@users.sourceforge.net> added the comment: I created bug 5116 with a patch to expose CrtSetDebugMode via the msvcrt module. I didn't attach it to this patch as it doesn't address the fundamental point in this bug, just offers a workaround to reinstate the default if desired. If there *was* agreement to change Python so only the test suite disabled the CRT reports, then such a change could probably now be implemented in .py code using the patch in bug 5116.
