Did that. Well, technically, I replaced two lines with the equivalent:
% CFLAGS='-O0 -g3' ./configure
I do see this in the Makefile:
CONFIGURE_CFLAGS= -O0 -g3
so, I didn't screw it up!
The test still failed:
