Ned Deily <n...@acm.org> added the comment: Removing the newer 8.4 /Library/Frameworks/Tcl.framework/ at runtime makes the problem go away. (Also the official 3.0.1 python wasn't linked with the newer Tcl in place so it doesn't exhibit these symptoms).
