Well, this issue has been discussed over and over again on pythonmac-sig over the past year or so (perhaps as far back as the 10.3.0 release). I do not have time at the moment to summarize, but the solution proposed is sane and there is no known better way. If you take a look at the WWDC2004 sources for Python, a similar patch is applied by Apple. However, Apple's patch breaks (at least) C++ compilation and SciPy's distutils extension for compiling Fortran due to distutils' stupidity.
