I had enquired this before but got no answer. I assume nobody's working on
it at the moment. I also proposed a slightly different semantic which would
prevent much boilerplate in the stdlib:

Please no.  This was discussed and settled long ago.
It takes less time to implement this than to go through the whole API debate again.
