One small comment before all this goes back to the distutils list: the abbreviation "py" shouldn't be used to refer to the Python interpreter as it is somewhat ambiguous due to the existence of the independent "py" package [1]. The longer "python_version" has a genuine advantage in clarity here. Cheers, Nick.
