I like this idea better, even though to keep the total workload
constant you'd need to more than double the interval between alphas.
Still, a 10- or 12-month release schedule feels like a much bigger
commitment to me (and I have managed a release that took 6 months, so
I do know what that feels like for real).

Heck, if you're only going to have *one* early alpha, you could do it
yourself, and see if you can persuade the installer builders to
volunteer one extra build.
