So as I understand it, so far the "best" proposal for a
replacement of my function-composition function
uses a (compatibility reducing) Python 2.4 feature
that Nick suggests will end up on "Gotcha" lists.

Hmmm: lambda is looking pretty good, I'd say.

The readability issue is valid, of course.  But then,
it has been one of the standard justifications for lambda.
