It depends on that python's tastes and preferences. Like many others who have already responded, I prefer an editor (VIM) and a separate commandline/terminal; I know of many others who share another responder's preference for Eclipse+PythonDev; other options that should be mentioned include IDLE, Wing, eric4, Microsoft Visual Studio (Windows-only), Apple's XCode (Mac-only), ...
