I'm not quite sure what you're trying to achieve, but I'd use
>>> r"\\a\\b\c".replace("\\\\", "")
'ab\\c'
>>> r"\\a\\b\c".replace("\\", "")
'abc'
Note that "\\" in the source is unescaped to "\" in the string. Use r"\\" to
prevent that.
