I've purchased a couple of books on Python and I keep going back to Python in a Nutshell. It's about the only printed text I keep on my desk all the time. It has a nice introduction to the language and includes the specification, too. If you're familiar with programming, http://diveintopython.org/<http://diveintopython.org/> is good (and it's free online if you don't want to spend the $ on the dead-tree version). I'm not sure how up to date it is, though.
Also, don't overlook the online tutorials. They're quite good.
