Strign formatting docs (http://docs.python.org/library/ stdtypes.html#string-formatting) say that specifying a conversion type is mandatory. So you actually should write something like: 'HELP!%(xyz)s/' % {'xyz':' PLEASE! '} -- http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/python-list
