What are you trying to install? is it available in Synaptic package manager? If it's a program written in python, then there may be a file called "setup.py". If there is then open a terminal, cd to that directory, and then type: python setup.py install (you may need to do "sudo" before it) - that will normally automatically compile any extensions written in C hope that helps.
