No they don't. Or at least not C++'s rules. C++ behaves exactly as I
should like.

(Or at least g++ does. Or rather *almost* as I would like, as by
default it generates a warning for "foo\zbar", while I think that an
error would be somewhat preferable.)

But you're right, it's too late to change this now.
