l.sort(cmp=sort_by_list)

output:
[[1, 2, 3, 4], [1, 2], [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]]
2 4
5 2
[[1, 2, 3, 4], [1, 2], [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]]
the order of the elements in the list did not change!
