In http://docs.python.org/using/unix.html#editors
you can read:
Geany is an excellent IDE with support for a lot of languages.
For more information, read: http://geany.uvena.de/

I followed that suggestion, and am very happy with Geany.
But I confess that I am not a sophisticated user.
