The 'Python Project HOWTO' gives good advice in terms of setting up a new project, what files and directories to create, what to put in version control, etc: http://infinitemonkeycorps.net/docs/pph/ Also, where I work we have tried many IDEs, but happily and productively use GVim and very little else, so don't feel you *have* to use an IDE.
