If you tried to study the standard libraries (or any but the simplest libraries on PyPI), you'd get lost. Studying the standard libraries would probably be a good way to learn good design once you have a great command of the language. Of course, actually doing a project to solve a real problem is probably the best way to learn once you have the basics down (I'm learning a lot doing my first Python project).
