yes, there is: subclass+extend the JSON-encoder, see pydoc json.

e.g.:
class JsonNanEncoder(json.JSONEncoder):
    def default(self, obj):
        if some-check-if-obj-is-NaN:
            return 'NaN'
        return json.JSONEncoder.default(self, obj)
