Blame the Japanese for that.  Apparently some of the biggest users of
Unicode are the various Japanese mobile phone manufacturers, TV stations, map makers and similar.

Also there's apparently a pun in Japanese involving the
words for 'poo' and 'luck'. So putting a poo symbol in
your text message means 'good luck'. Given that, it's
not *quite* as silly as it seems.
