Actually, optional indentation is not a bad idea in itself. For example in Haskell, you can use indentation much in the same way as you use it in Python. But you can also add semicolons and braces instead, which override the indentation, on a per-statement basis. This permits more freedom in code layout, for example it allows reasonable one-line ifs.
